On Friday February 21st at 7:30 p.m., The Charlottesville Jazz Society and WTJU-FM present the duo of guitarist Ayman Fanous and world renowned violinist Jason Kao Hwang in concert at The Haven in Charlottesville. Opening this evening of jazz, improvisation and chamber music will be Charlottesville residents Greg Howard (Chapman Stick) and Stephen Nachmanovitch (violin). Jason Kao Hwang was voted “Rising Star, violin” by Downbeat magazine in 2012, and has received many other awards and accolades. His recent octet recording “Burning Bridge” combined Chinese and Western instruments. It was commissioned by Chamber Music America, and appeared on numerous “best of” lists in 2013. University of Virginia graduate Ayman Fanous has achieved distinctive and unconventional sounds and techniques on guitar, managing to combine and fuse classical, flamenco and free jazz techniques. For this concert Fanous will also reach back into his Egyptian ancestry to perform on the bouzouki.
