Founded in 1940, the Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society seeks to study, preserve and promote the history of Charlottesville and Albemarle County, Virginia. The Society strives to accomplish this mission through a variety of public programs, including exhibits, publications, lectures, walking tours, oral history interviews and various educational programs.
The Society's research library, the Charlottesville-Albemarle Historical Collection, contains over 2,000 books and bound periodicals, as well as photographs, manuscripts, maps, pamphlets, newspapers and vertical files relating to the history of our community.
The Society's museum collection contains over 1,500 artifacts of historical significance to Charlottesville and Albemarle County.
The Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society is located in the historic McIntire Building in downtown Charlottesville. The McIntire Building was completed in 1921 and donated to the City of Charlottesville as the city's first municipal library by local civic benefactor Paul Goodloe McIntire.
Monday - Friday, 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.; Saturday, 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. No Admission Charge. Research inquiries may be sent to library@albemarlehistory.org.

Historic Charlottesville Walking Tours

Join an expertly guided walking tour of historic downtown Charlottesville! Stroll around the Court Square familiar to Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and James Monroe. Learn about the early years of Charlottesville, its citizens, businesses and buildings. During a one-hour tour, you will see reminders of over 250 years of our community’s heritage. This June, enjoy a fun family outing in Historic Downtown Charlottesville! The Ablemarle Charlottesville Historical Society is very pleased to partner with the Virginia Discovery Museum in hosting a new and exciting FUNdraising event. Spend Saturday afternoon at the McIntire Building, where kitds can try on period costumes, make their own arts and crafts, meet an archaeologist, and lots more -- all while learning about local history! All ages are welcome!
