Each year, major annual festivals and events draw thousands of visitors, starting with First Night Virginia, a fun and safe New Year's Eve celebration on the Downtown Mall. In the spring, the Virginia Festival of the Book offers five days of mostly free events celebrating reading and the culture around books - not simply as a consumer passion but as an in-depth exploration of literature.
