Gardens
High above Charlottesville at his Monticello home, Thomas Jefferson was known as an avid gardner. The former President once proclaimed, "no occupation is so delightful to me as the culture of the earth, and no culture comparable to that of the garden." Over 200 years later, Jefferson's dedication towards gardening is deeply rooted within Charlottesville-Albemarle.
Jefferson's Pavilion Gardens at the University of Virginia are open and available to visitors at times. Special tours combining public and private gardens take place during April's Historic Garden Week. In addition, three nearby sites - Monticello, Ash Lawn-Highland and Montpelier - offer gardens and groves of presidential stature. Check out the listings below to see all the blooming destinations of Charlottesville-Albemarle.
