The Free Bridge Quintet, the faculty jazz group of the McIntire Department of Music, will present its 20 Year Anniversary concert on Friday, April 6 at 8:00PM in Old Cabel Hall at the University of Virginia. Jazz, celebrating its one hundredth year in recordings, is a musical style celebrated for both its innovated performances of popular music, and its inventive original compositions. The Free Bridge Quintet, celebrating its twentieth year as the official jazz group of UVA, is in turn celebrating the importance of original jazz composition as a driving force behind the continued significance of jazz as a vital art form in American music.
The Free Bridge Quintet is the official faculty jazz quintet of the University of Virginia McIntire Department of Music. Founded in 1997, it features Jeff Decker on saxophones, Robert Jospé on the drums, Peter Spaar on bass, John D’earth on trumpet and flugelhorn, and Butch Taylor on piano. The quintet has been a staple of not only the UVA and Charlottesville jazz scene, but also the greater Central Virginia jazz scene for more than two decades. The Quintet, throughout its over forty concerts, is well known for its celebrations of the great figures of jazz history, but, equally known as a group that produces its own innovative works.
