Madison-Barbour Historic District

The largest rural historic district in Virginia and included on the National Register of Historic Places. This forty- square mile area continues a rich tradition of agriculture and land preservation and includes many well preserved farms dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. Early landscape features such as fence rows and old road beds are visible to the passer-by and offer a nostalgic view of undisturbed rural countryside. You can drive by three National Register sites: "Frascati," built c. 1823 in the style of Thomas Jefferson, "Rocklands," a significant architectural creation of early 20th century and the Somerset Christian Church, c. 1850.
