Take advantage of the multitude of local activities in Charlottesville and Albemarle County and
submit your best local summer snapshots for a chance to win your own Charlottesville "staycation!"

June 9, 2015 (Charlottesville, VA) -The Charlottesville Albemarle Convention and Visitors Bureau (CACVB) is inviting this area's residents to "Stay Local, Play Local" again this summer. This initiative encourages citizens to discover and take advantage of the wide variety of free and low-cost activities that Charlottesville and Albemarle County have to offer.

The CACVB is also calling for your best local photographs in a social media contest on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram! The photographs should highlight the beauty of our area and showcase it as a fantastic place for locals to "play" this summer. A winner will be randomly selected at the end of the contest and will receive a two-night stay, including breakfast at the Oakhurst Inn, a wine tour provided by Monticello Wine Tour & Coach Company, and a guided history tour from Cville Tours with access to Monticello, Ash Lawn-Highland and an included lunch at Michie Tavern. The deadline for entries is August 12, 2015 and all photographs submitted must contain the hashtag #staylocalcville in order to be eligible. All of the details of this contest can be found here:

There are certainly endless options for local attractions and activities that appeal to people of all ages.  Explore stops along the Monticello Artisan Trail or the Jefferson Heritage Trail, discover a new crush along the Monticello Wine Trail, quench your thirst at one of our local brewpubs or cideries, or rediscover timeless historic attractions such as Monticello, Ash Lawn-Highland or Michie Tavern.  Take a short drive to see what's new in the charming towns of Scottsville or Crozet.  Before you visit, remember to check out these attractions' websites, as many are offering special discounts this summer.

Another way of enjoying Charlottesville and Albemarle County this summer is by taking advantage of the wide array of outdoor activities our area has to offer.  You can spend a day in the woods, hiking miles of trails in Albemarle County, followed by a day at the beach at Chris Greene Lake. To beat the hot summertime temperatures, you can spend a day in the water, by leisurely floating down the James River in a canoe, kayak, or even a tube! Outdoor enthusiasts can also enjoy fishing, horseback riding, golfing and even hot air ballooning, all within a short drive.

"Residents have so many selections to pick from," said Jane Dittmar, Chairman of the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors. "Choosing to stay and play local means less money spent on gas and more resources and time available to enjoy our many backyard treasures."

"We are fortunate with all the possibilities that exist right here at home, so planning a vacation can be affordable and rewarding," said Charlottesville Mayor Satyendra Huja.

"Charlottesville and Albemarle County have so much to offer," said Kurt Burkhart, CACVB Executive Director.  "From award-winning wineries and restaurants, to outdoor activities, historic landmarks, unique shopping and a vibrant culture and music scene, it is no wonder that our area is such an appealing destination for tourists. This summer, we invite locals to be tourists in their own backyards and spend their vacation dollars right here in our community."

In addition to online resources at, there are two visitor centers where locals can obtain tourism-related information.  One is located Downtown (610 East Main St. - open daily 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.). The second visitor center will open this summer in Crozet; more details to be announced soon.
