How to Shop Like a Local in Charlottesville: 7 Insider Tips
From charming boutiques on the historic Downtown Mall to artisan markets and makers’ studios, Charlottesville and Albemarle County offer countless ways to shop locally and creatively.
Whether you’re searching for the perfect Virginia-made gift, one-of-a-kind art, or an in-person experience, here are seven tips for shopping like a local in Charlottesville, Virginia.
1. Shop the Historic Downtown Mall
Start at the heart of Charlottesville’s shopping scene—the Downtown Mall, one of the longest (and oldest) pedestrian malls in the country. Lined with local boutiques, art galleries, and independent bookstores, it’s the perfect place to browse, grab a latte, and people-watch in between shops. Don’t miss favorites like:
- New Dominion Bookshop
- C’ville Arts Cooperative Gallery
- Bittersweet Boutique (for a true taste of local style!)
Downtown also has a wonderful collection of secondhand shops, all within walking distance 👇
2. Visit the Farmers Market
If you’re looking for produce and products right from the source, make time for the farmers markets – there are several held around town throughout the week (depending on the month). These beloved outdoor markets feature local farmers, food vendors, artists, and more. Perfect for finding fresh produce, shopping for timely seasonal gifts, or even just perusing the one-of-a-kind wares.
To find even more local wares, make a stop at one of Albemarle County’s country markets, like Polly’s Folly, Greenwood Gourmet Grocery, or Batesville Market.
3. Purchase Experiences, Not Just Things
Some of the best souvenirs aren’t items—they’re experiences. Go on a wine tour and tasting at a Monticello AVA vineyard, sign up for a hands-on class with a local artist at McGuffey Art Center, or venture out on a food tour of the Downtown Mall. These are a great treat for yourself or even a gift for others to enjoy at a later date – many businesses offer gift cards and vouchers! Either way, these experiences are sure to connect you directly with Charlottesville’s creative community and make for lasting memories.
4. Shop Sustainably
Locals love to thrift, upcycle, and shop sustainably! Explore Low Vintage, Darling x Dashing Boutique, Eternal Attic, or Twice Is Nice in Charlottesville for curated secondhand fashion, home décor, and accessories with character.
In Albemarle County, spend time at A&W Antique Mall, Kenny Ball Antiques, and Keswick Antique Mall for curated antiques, decor, and collectibles – perfect for secondhand shoppers and collectors alike!
We also recommend High Tor Gear Exchange at McIntire Plaza, which always has an impressive supply of secondhand outdoor gear. While you’re there, stop into the Plaza’s other walkable shops, like the Scrappy Elephant, Heyday Antiques & Vintage, and Circa. 5. Support Local Galleries
Charlottesville’s creative spirit shines through its art scene, with a plethora of local galleries showcasing local, regional, and national artists. On the Downtown Mall, stop at C’ville Arts for locally made pottery, jewelry, and prints. Second Street Gallery is also worth the visit, as much of the art on display is available for purchase. Just a street over from Downtown is McGuffey Art Center, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2025! McGuffey is one of the oldest artist-run cooperative art centers in the country and home to over 50 resident artists, each with items for sale in their various workspaces.
In Scottsville, check out the free SCAN - Gallery on Valley exhibit, featuring local art that rotates throughout the year. Lastly, you can’t forget to visit the Crozet Artisan Depot, which is just a short 20-minute drive outside of the city (and a great excuse to visit some wineries). The Depot features items from more than 90 local artisans, with items for almost any budget and a variety of aesthetics. Supporting these spaces helps keep the city’s artistic community thriving.
