1. The Fried Chicken

For the some of the best southern food in town, grab a meal at Michie Tavern and stay a while for the complete 18th-century dining experience. On the menu, discover Michie Tavern’s renowned home-style fried chicken. The secret to its bold southern flavor is the marinated chicken that is dry rolled in a special breading and fried in peanut-free oil. Not a meat eater? Not to worry — the menu is packed with vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options like stewed tomatoes, black-eyed peas, mashed potatoes, beets and more.

All of the 18th-century Southern recipes are served at the fixed-price buffet offered in "The Ordinary." An Ordinary is the period name for the dining room and a British term for an eating or victualing house, where diners eat at a fixed price per meal.

Named “Restaurant of the Year” in 2020 by the Virginia Restaurant, Lodging and Travel Association, Michie Tavern's rustic setting, featuring hand-hewn logs and beamed ceilings, is family friendly and great for large parties.

2. The Pub

Immerse yourself in the oldest section of the Tavern, and grab a drink in the late afternoon at the 1784 Pub. The ambiance provides a relaxed, casual setting to drink, eat and enjoy 18th century games. You’ll find period antiques throughout the Pub and historical decor representative of the era including the oak caged bar fashioned after Michie Tavern’s original Tap Bar.

3. The Shopping

Take home a piece of American history at Michie Tavern. Browse The General Store located in the Meadow Run Grist Mill ca. 1797. Collect a momento from your visit with a variety of items available at the General Store. Choose from local food items, local wines, beer, hard ciders, Virginia-made soaps and lotions, home decor items, apparel, jewelry and more. You can even explore the Mill Room which houses a fully-functioning bull wheel while shopping. This charming, old mercantile atmosphere makes a great background for photo ops.

4. The Views

The tavern is nestled between some of the most gorgeous scenic landscapes, so while you’re there, stay a while and make sure to take it all in.

Immerse yourself in the breathtaking panoramic views and lush greenery of the Blue Ridge Mountains while sitting on the front porch of the 1784 Pub or dining on the covered Courtyard. If it's cold out, head inside to the Tap Room, cozy up next to the roaring fireplace and imagine the experiences of the travelers that once came before.

5. The History

The history of Michie Tavern is just as compelling as the experience you’ll have while visiting. This Virginia Historic Landmark was established in 1784 by Scotsman William Michie and served as the social center of the community and provided travelers with food, drink and lodging. In the 1920s a local businesswoman had the vision of moving it to Monticello Mountain, some 17 miles from its original location and in 1928 the entire building was taken apart beam by beam and reconstructed on its current site. Today, Michie Tavern’s tradition of hospitality continues on even after all these years.
