2. Catch the Year's Most Anticipated Films

Every year, the VAFF offers attendees a first look at some of the most talked-about films on the festival circuit, and 2025 is no exception. This year's Spotlight Films lineup features a powerhouse slate:

  • 'Christy,' the story of groundbreaking female prizefighter Christy Martin.
  • 'Train Dreams,' featuring Joel Edgerton as a logger living a life of simple grace against the backdrop of the revolutionary change that defined the early 20th century.
  • 'The Secret Agent,' a political thriller starring Wagner Moura (Narcos) as a technology expert on the run in 1977 Brazil – a role and film gaining some serious Oscar buzz.
  • 'Hedda,' director Nia DaCosta’s stunning and modern reimagination of Henrik Ibsen’s famed play Hedda Gabler, starring Tessa Thompson (Passing, Creed).

3. See the Stars (and Hear From Them Too!)

This year’s festival brings a true fan-favorite back to the big screen — Ryan Coogler’s 'Sinners,' one of the surprise box office hits of the year. Following the screening, audiences will be treated to a special appearance by breakout star Miles Caton, a musician and actor who’s been performing onstage since he was just two years old. Caton will sit for a discussion and then put on a brief musical performance. A number of other actors, producers, and filmmakers will be at this year's festival to interact with attendees. 👉 See the Full Guest List and Start Planning

4. Travel the World Through Film

One of the VAFF’s most exciting traditions is its celebration of global cinema, and this year's VAFF will feature 14 films from around the globe that have been nominated by their country for consideration in the Best International Film category for the Academy Awards. Among them are Sentimental Value (Norway), The Tale of Silyan (North Macedonia), and Late Shift (Switzerland). With stories spanning continents and cultures, these films remind us why movies remain one of the most powerful ways to connect across borders. 👉 See the Full List of International Oscar Contenders

5. Celebrate Virginia Talent

Each year, the VFF proudly champions the Commonwealth’s creative voices, and this year’s lineup puts homegrown talent front and center.

  • Charlottesville’s own Clay Tweel will screen 'Andy Kaufman is Me' at the Violet Crown, offering a rare and revealing look into the life and mind of Andy Kaufman, one of the entertainment world’s most irreverent and unforgettable talents.
  • Richmond filmmaker Melody C. Roscher will lead a screening and discussion of her film 'Bird in Hand,' a dark comedy about family life that’s as sharp as it is heartfelt.
  • The film 'Shenandoah' promises to deliver a unique look into the heart of Shenandoah National Park, including its animals, landscapes, and history.

6. More Than Movies

At the VAFF, the films are just the beginning. The discussions have become a hallmark of the experience, combining filmmakers with thought leaders around the many themes that are explored – including many from the University of Virginia. And the series of free panels at the CODE building on Saturday will offer audiences a unique and intimate look inside the film industry. And don’t forget the parties! Don’t miss your chance to mix and mingle with filmmakers and fellow community members – including at the Opening Night Gala on Wednesday at The Bradbury and the Late Night Wrap Party on Saturday at Three Notch’d Craft Kitchen & Brewery!
