Five Reasons to Attend the 2026 Virginia Theatre Festival

The Virginia Theatre Festival returns for its 52nd summer season with a lineup that includes a madcap mystery, a beloved modern musical and a dynamic look into the life and art of one of the most iconic cultural figures the world has ever known.

This year’s VTF will run from Saturday, June 20 through Sunday, July 26 in the Culbreth and Ruth Caplin Theatres on UVA Arts Grounds. Tell your friends and make your plans early, because as the last few seasons have shown, these are destined to be some of the Central Virginia summer’s hottest tickets! Tickets go on sale on April 17 and will be available at virginiatheatrefestival.org.

Here are five reasons why the Virginia Theatre Festival should be at the top of your summer plans!

1. VTF puts the PRO in Professional Theatre!

This summer the VTF stages will once again feature a stunning array of talent highlighted by Broadway and Off-Broadway veterans, regional theatre standouts, and some of the leading actors from our own bountiful Charlottesville and UVA communities! As Virginia’s longest-running professional theatre, VTF offers some of the best indoor stargazing in the Commonwealth, plus plenty of chances to see the fastest rising stars in the industry and to appreciate the extraordinary work of the theatre world’s most talented artists, designers, and technicians.

2. The Name is Holmes… Sherlock Holmes

Sherlock Holmes and his trusty sidekick Watson are on the case when a Bohemian King’s stolen letters cascade into an international mystery filled with spies, blackmail in the latest from the Tony-winning playwright Ken Ludwig’s Moriarty. Joined by American actress Irene Adler, Holmes and Watson face off against criminal mastermind Professor James Moriarty and his devious henchmen in a show featuring five actors playing countless roles. It’s a highly entertaining adventure where disguises, danger, and laughter lurk around every corner. Ken Ludwig’s Moriarty, directed by Nicolas Minas, will run from June 20-28 in the Ruth Caplin Theatre.

3. Start Spreading the Newsies

Speaking of pros, VTF is thrilled to welcome back UVA alum and festival favorite Matthew Steffens, who has directed and choreographed our recent smash hit performances of Cabaret and Into the Woods. This summer the Broadway veteran will be to directing and choreographing Disney’s

Newsies, the inspiring and hit-filled classic musical about young Jack Kelly, who rallies his fellow turn-of-the-century New York “newsies” to strike back against the leading media moguls of the to protest unfair conditions and fight for what is right. The show’s 35-member cast, one of the largest in VTF history, will feature actors from New York and around the country, not to mention a healthy contingent of kids and adults from right here in Charlottesville! Directed and Choregraphed by VTF and UVA alum Matthew Steffens, Disney’s Newsies will run from July 9-19 in the Culbreth Theatre.

4. Dive Deep into the Life of Frida

Few people have ever captured the heart and imagination of the world like the legendary Frida Kahlo. Now Frida…A Self Portrait, from acclaimed actor and playwright Vanessa Severo, brings the icon to life in an unfailingly original and boldly theatrical experience that sheds light on the artist as well as the performer while exploring how we shape ourselves through the art we love. Severo unlocks moving parallels between herself and Frida Kahlo while crafting a poetic performance that explores Kahlo’s breathtaking life and astonishing genius. Frida…A Self Portrait, written and performed by Vanesa Severo and directed by Joanie Schultz, will run from July 23-26 in the Ruth Caplin Theatre.

5. You Can Make a Weekend Out of It

There's plenty to do in Charlottesville & Albemarle County, so you may as well stay more than one day! If you're more of a night person, grab dinner on the Downtown Mall before catching a show on Friday or Saturday night. Afterwards, head to one of our beloved bars -- Miller's Downtown and The Whiskey Jar often have live music late into the night. For upscale vibes and creative cocktails, head to The Fitzroy or The Alley Light.

If you're more of a mid-day theatre lover, there are showings at 2PM on Saturday and Sunday too! That gives you the perfect amount of time to grab brunch beforehand and then do some more exploring afterwards! Here are our top seven farm-to-table brunch spots for some inspiration!
