Montpelier is a memorial to James and Dolley Madisons and the Enslaved Community, a museum of American history, and a center for constitutional education that engages the public with the enduring legacy of Madison's most powerful idea: government by the people.
Montpelier offers a variety of tours including a classic House Tour, a Constitution Tour, and an Enslaved Community Tour.
In addition to guided tours, Montpelier offers a Property Pass where guests can explore the grounds at their own pace, including the Annie duPont Formal Garden, established in the 20th century by the duPont family who owned Montpelier from 1902-1983.
This terraced garden, designed by celebrated landscape architect Charles Gillette, boasts a multitude of seasonal flowers, plants, and vegetables, expertly cared for by our Horticulture Department.
Montpelier offers great outdoor experiences with over 8 miles of hiking trails through the old-growth Landmark Forest, the historic garden, and plenty of outdoor seating. Plus, we are dog-friendly.
The Museum Shop is open during operating hours and includes an array of books, t-shirts, kid-centric gifts, and locally-made jewelry, snacks, and home goods.
With so much to do, you'll enjoy the whole day at Montpelier!
