Beyond Dreamings: The RIse of Indigenous Australian Art in the United States

Beyond Dreamings is a colorful selection of artworks from Kluge-Ruhe’s permanent collection and includes eight artworks on loan from significant private collections in the United States, in media ranging from painting and photography to wooden, porcelain and fiber works.
Thirty years ago, Indigenous Australian art was catapulted onto the world stage in the exhibition Dreamings: The Art of Aboriginal Australia at the Asia Society in New York City. Kluge-Ruhe’s Beyond Dreamings exhibition reveals the ways in which, since 1988, Indigenous Australian artists have forged one of the most globally significant art movements of our time. Curated by nine graduate students at the University of Virginia, Beyond Dreamings features key artworks from the original exhibition alongside recent works that show the continuing diversity and dynamism of Indigenous Australian art. The Kluge-Ruhe Collection is the only museum outside of Australia dedicated to Indigenous Australian art.
