Mark your calendars now and plan to join us for a magical musical experience as 12 Shenandoah Valley friends gather on stage to present Paul Simon’s Graceland album from start to finish.
“The swelling background vocals in the final moments of “Graceland” have embraced me in many quiet moments– sometimes in a car on a long stretch of highway, sometimes late at night as a single light illuminates my desk. Paul Simon created this all-time great “traveling” song for his collaborative album by chance, when discovering a rhythm he liked as he worked on another track with Forere Motloheloa. Although it’s the second song on the album of the same name, it sets the tone for the rest of the tracks. It’s a song about a journey of discovery, about the need to respond to something that calls to you when you don’t know why. That happened to Simon, as I suspect it has happened to almost every artist who has searched for meaning, identity or beauty in this world through their chosen medium. Assuredly, a six-year-old me could not have understood the lyrics to the extent that I appreciate them today. But something about the melody must have spoken to me as I was taking my own first steps as an artist. I like to think that those soothing voices on the track were assuring me that it’s okay to explore, to learn as you go in life and not expect to have all of the answers right away, and to feel confident that in the end you’ll reach whatever destination is meant for you. After all, Simon didn’t write about the crowd around Elvis’s tomb like Marc Cohn– he wrote about the trip there. Today, even at 38, I think I am still going to Graceland. Thank you to the talented musicians of Cartoon Graveyard for imbuing new energy and spirit into songs I’ve been listening to for over 30 years. Graceland has been my favorite album for most of my life, but I never would have predicted that a group of people would come along, three decades after I first popped on those massive metal headphones, and offer me the chance to engage with the lyrics and imagery in a way that would make them even more meaningful and personal. Each night I’ve had the opportunity to see you perform has forged a lifelong memory. Yitho omanqoba.” -Ben Lundy, Artist (of all Cartoon Graveyard art)
