Old Albemarle County Jail Tours

Tours by reservation only Nov-midApril.  Call for reservations atleast 48 hours ahead.  Must have at least four people to schedule by reservation. 

The Old Albemarle County Jail is the fifth jail constructed by Albemarle County in 1876 .  The jail complex consisting the original stone section, a brick addition, the jailer's house, sally port  and the surrounding wall served the county until 1974.

The Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society proposes to restore and rehabilitate the jail complex - an important contributing component to the Charlottesville and Albemarle Court House Historic Districts while providing needed museum space to chronicle the history of the Charlottesville and Albemarle County community. The Old Jail Museum project that will also allow visitors to explore the history of crime and punishment.

Old Albemarle County Jail  will be open on Saturdays, from noon - 2pm for limited tours.  Tickets are $5 per person and can be purchased from your guide at the start of the tour.  All proceeds and donation will be used for the restoration of this important landmark.
