For many writers, the biggest obstacle to creativity isn't a lack of ideas—it's physical and mental exhaustion. To combat the "stuck" feeling that plagues so many creatives, author Andi Cumbo and Sterling Howell, a public historian and Yoga Alliance registered yoga teacher, have partnered to launch Body, Breath, and The Page, a two-day intensive retreat taking place this spring.

On March 28-29, the historic grounds of James Monroe’s Highland will transform into a sanctuary for writers. Unlike traditional conferences that focus solely on marketing or craft, this immersive weekend focuses on the physical connection between the body and the creative mind.

"We often treat writing as a brain-only activity, ignoring the fact that stress and tension in the body block our creative flow," says co-host Andi Cumbo. "This retreat is designed to get writers out of their heads and back into their bodies, which is where the real stories live."

The choice of venue is no accident. With both hosts having backgrounds in public history, the retreat leans into the power of place.

"Doing this work at Highland, surrounded by such deep history and landscape, makes the experience even more grounding," adds Howell. "We are inviting writers to connect not just with their own stories, but with the environment around them."

The non-residential retreat runs from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM daily. Attendees will alternate between gentle yoga practice suitable for all bodies and generative writing workshops.

Highlights of the weekend include:

Yoga for Creatives: Sequences specifically designed to open the hips and shoulders—areas where writers hold the most tension.

Generative Writing Sessions: Prompt-based workshops to jumpstart new projects or break through blocks in current manuscripts.

Historic Inspiration: The unique opportunity to write and reflect on the grounds of James Monroe's Highland.
