Steeplechase racing. The races began on May 13, 1978 and have been a staple of Charlottesville social life ever since. Each race draws crowds of between 18,000 and 23,000 people, including steeplechase enthusiasts, Charlottesville residents, tourists, and area college students. Spectators may purchase parking spots around the racecourse, and many people host delicious tailgate picnics for their family and friends.
The races are held the last Saturday in April and the last Sunday in September. The Fall Race Meet is Family Day at the Foxfield Races and includes horse related children's activities before and between the races. Business sponsorships and private tents are available in addition to the tailgating spaces. 10:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. Admission Charge. Sanctioned by the National Steeplechase Association as two of eleven races held in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
