Road & Gravel

There are a number of road and gravel routes for visitors who want to explore Charlottesville as well as neighboring Crozet, Scottsville, and scenic Albemarle County. Try the Charlottesville Sites Tour for a tour of the city or the Western Albemarle Scenic Tour for a more peaceful ride at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Fox Mountain Gravel Loop will take you past three beautiful wineries, and the TransAmerica Bike Trail provides a nearly-50 mile stretch, from one side of the county to the other.

Charlottesville Sites Tour Road Ride

What better way to see many of the great sites of Charlottesville than by the saddle of your bike?! This route passes historic Michie Tavern, Thomas Jefferson's Monticello, James Monroe's Highland, UVA's Scott Stadium, the Rotunda, the Memorial to Enslaved Laborers, the Downtown Mall, Ix Art Park, as well as many great wineries, parks, and more!

Western Albemarle Scenic Tour

28.1 miles

A beautiful ride on peaceful roads at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains. This route starts and ends in Crozet, a small town in Western Albemarle County, and passes by a number of coffee shops, wineries, orchards, and country stores, as well as the stunning Beaver Creek Reservoir.

Fox Mountain Gravel Loop

21.3 miles

This route starts at Wyant's Country Store and takes you through scenic White Hall in Albemarle County. You'll pass two wineries (Stinson and White Hall vineyards) as well as Montfair Resort Farm along this loop.

TransAmerica Bicycle Trail — Albemarle County

50 miles

The TransAmerica Bicycle Trail is a 4,218-mile-long route that starts in Astoria, OR and ends in Yorktown, VA.

Almost 50 miles of this route crosses Albemarle County, dropping from the ridge of the Blue Ridge Mountains at Rockfish Gap, traveling west through Crozet and Charlottesville, and leaving the county just east of Palmyra.

Prepare for Your Adventure

Bring enough food and water. It's important to stay hydrated at any time of year. Make sure you have enough food and water for the duration of your ride.

Pack it in, pack it out. Make sure any trash created during your ride stays with you and is properly disposed of. Wrappers and packaging can fly out of pockets!

Be aware of the local wildlife. You may encounter local wildlife during your ride. Stay aware of your surroundings and give wildlife the proper space if you encounter them on the trail.

Watch out for vehicles. Many of these routes are on roads that are shared with vehicles and without protected bike lanes. Stay aware of your surroundings and be sure to signal your intentions to others on the road.

Stay visible. Wear or mount a rear blinking light to your bike.

Have a plan and make sure someone knows the plan. Make sure you know how to get back to your vehicle at the end of your ride. Be sure to share your plans or location with someone you trust.
