As our featured artist for November, Genevieve Story shares a new collection of wildlife art as pyrography on wood. Join us for her opening show on Friday, November 6th from 5–8 p.m. during the Historic Downtown Mall’s First Friday event.
For this show, Story has stepped out of her comfort zone of making functional pyrography pieces on leather and into creating larger-scale representations on wood. While it is a more difficult medium to work with, she appreciates how the natural grain of the wood adds an interesting dimension of movement to her pieces.
Since childhood, Genevieve has found herself drawn to the peace and wonder of the natural environment, spending much of her time there in quiet observation of wild things. This, along with a natural talent for pencil drawing, led her first to environmental and wildlife sciences and then back to creating art centered around her love of all things wild.
Driven by an instinct to recreate the living things she sees in nature, Genevieve starts with a photograph or sketch, bringing it to life with skilled pyrography techniques honed over the last 10 years. The detail in her work reflects a deep attention to capturing the essence of a leaf, a feather, an animal. As a subject comes to life through her hands, lines and shading begin to translate into a recognition of the growth, symmetry, and patterns found throughout our natural environment.
This November, Genevieve invites you to slow down, become the observer, and appreciate the intricate design of wild things.
This exhibit will be open through the month of November.
