Dia de los Muertos

November 3 to November 14
10:00 AM to 6:00 PM

McGuffey Art Center

201 2nd Street NW
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Virginia 22903

For 15 years, McGuffey Art Center has created community altars filled with photographs, flowers, candles, favorite foods, and meaningful objects that help us remember those we love. Through art, music, dance, food, and remembrance we celebrate the lives and stories that continue to be part of our community.

This year, McGuffey will also host Hostile Terrain 94, an installation that remembers migrants who have died crossing the Sonoran Desert. The exhibit invites us to reflect on the lives and journeys behind each name.

Additional programming will include, in collaboration with Woven Roots Collective, a Spanish-language film screening of Perfume de Gardenias (November 13, 7pm), a Puerto Rican-Colombian dark comedy-drama written and directed by Macha Colón. The film follows Isabel, a recently widowed woman who finds new purpose in creating personalized funerals for members of her community. With humor and tenderness, it explores grief, caregiving, and the creative ways we honor and celebrate the lives of those who have passed.
