On August 26 – Women’s Equality Day – ACHS will join the Charlottesville Chapter of the National Organization for Women and the League of Women Voters of the Charlottesville Area to commemorate women gaining voting rights. The festive tea party will celebrate the suffragists who achieved the largest expansion of democracy in U.S. history and the activists who kept fighting for voting rights and full legal equality for all women. That work continues today as public figures are openly calling for the repeal of the 19th Amendment and the voting rights earned by women over a century ago.

Join us as we look back while pressing forward. Learn about civic actions you can take today while enjoying trivia games, prizes, teatime refreshments, and socializing with friends. Suffrage attire/white clothes/pearls welcome!

A special exhibit in the ACHS lobby will also be on display to celebrate local women. Twelve portraits by local artist and activist Frances Brand (1901-1990) will highlight the achievements and barriers broken by women in the Albemarle and Charlottesville area.
