ABOUT

Albemarle County and the City of Charlottesville boast an unusually rich and striking history. Men and women, both well-known and unknown, remarkable and ordinary helped build Charlottesville for over a period of 250 years. That local history has been preserved in the structures and monuments, which give Charlottesville its character. Join us on an Historic Walking Tour to learn about these men and women, the houses, storefronts, schools, places of worship, and public buildings in which they passed their lives, and view the cemeteries where they now rest. The Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society (ACHS) offers year-round walking tours of historic Charlottesville by trained staff and volunteers. Our guided tours are offered by appointment Monday through Friday 9am – 4pm, and Saturdays 10am – 2pm. The tours last about one hour and cost $7 per person. We ask that masks be worn and social distance observed for the duration of the tour. To reserve a tour, email programs@albemarlehistory.org, or call 434-296-1492 Current offerings: Court Square & environs: Enjoy a walk from the Albemarle County Courthouse, the original 1762 core of Charlottesville, to the now infamous Market Street Park. Along the way, our knowledgeable guides will share stories of local history from pre-Revolution to recent events. Maplewood Cemetery: A new tour of Charlottesville’s oldest public cemetery. Join us for a visit to the last resting place of some of Charlottesville's most interesting deceased personalities and take part in a conversation about what cemeteries, burial practices, and mortuary imagery reveal about society and culture and how they have changed over time. More tour offerings are in development; checkout our website and social media for updates
