Accessibility

Travel should be for everyone—and accessibility and inclusion are at the heart of making that happen. An inclusive destination ensures that all visitors, regardless of ability, age, race, income, gender identity, or background, can fully experience and enjoy what it has to offer.

Accessible tourism isn’t just the right thing to do—it’s smart business. By removing barriers and creating welcoming experiences, destinations open their doors to a wider audience, strengthen their reputation, and boost economic impact. Inclusion also means telling a fuller story—sharing the voices, traditions, and histories of all communities. This creates more authentic, enriching experiences and reflects the values of a destination that truly cares.

When accessibility and inclusion are prioritized, tourism becomes more than a visit—it becomes a connection that leaves every traveler feeling valued, respected, and welcome.

Wheel the World

With the goal of making Charlottesville and Albemarle County a more accessible and inclusive destination, the CACVB partners with Wheel the World—a travel platform that helps visitors find experiences based on their individual accessibility needs.

Through this partnership, participating tourism businesses receive:

  • Accessibility assessments of their properties with recommended improvements
  • Staff training to better serve travelers with diverse needs

Businesses that complete assessments are featured on the Wheel the World website as Destination Verified, helping them reach a broader audience of travelers. For information on the next round of assessments, email development@visitcharlottesville.org.

Destination Verified businesses that need access to Wheel the World’s free training course should email civey@albemarle.org.
