Home to the likes of Starr Hill, Three Notch'd, and Champion, Charlottesville supports the kind of craft brewing scene every city in the country attempts to cultivate. The difference here is that our pioneering brewers have been ahead of the curve for well over a decade. Blue Ridge Brewing Company, Virginia's first brew pub, was founded here in Charlottesville in 1987. Though the Blue Ridge Brewing Company is no longer in business, co-founder Paul Summers (great-grandson of William Faulkner) went on to found Knight's Gambit Vineyard in 2003.
More recent additions to our craft beer scene include Random Row Brewing Co. and Decipher Brewing. Just as our most successful breweries are expanding into neighboring cities like Richmond and Roanoke, so too have other brewers taken an interest in Charlottesville. Wild Wolf Brewing Company and Hardywood have taprooms within our city limits.
